Letting Go to Gain Traction: A Visionary’s EOS Journey at Provident Insurance
Are you curious how EOS (the Entrepreneurial Operating System®) actually works inside a business? Or what happens when a Visionary partners with an Integrator, even a Fractional Integrator – to bring discipline, focus & traction to the table?
At Integrated Executives, we know the real power of EOS comes to life when you hear it straight from the people running on it every day. That’s why we’re sharing the story of Provident Insurance, a business that has truly experienced what getting real traction feels like.
In this two-part feature, we hear directly from both sides of the leadership equation.
In this article, CEO and Visionary Steve Owens shares what it meant to let go of operational control, embrace his Visionary role, and trust the Integrator to bring focus and discipline. In a companion article, Integrator Paul Natac tells his side of the journey, stepping into the Integrator seat and driving execution across the business. Together, their perspectives show how EOS transforms not just companies, but the leaders who run them.
But first, what exactly is EOS, and why is the Visionary/Integrator dynamic so critical?
What is EOS?
EOS is a simple yet powerful system for entrepreneurial companies that want clarity, accountability, and growth. At its core is the Visionary/Integrator™ relationship: the Visionary brings big-picture ideas and sets the direction, while the Integrator provides the structure, focus, and discipline to make those ideas happen.
When both roles are working together, leadership teams stop spinning their wheels and start gaining real traction.
Client Success Story
Before EOS: A Room Full of Managers
Provident Insurance was growing, but their structure wasn’t keeping up. With ten managers meeting weekly, discussions were dominated by departmental updates. Strategy and leadership took a back seat.
Steve recalls: “Before EOS we had a Management Team with 10 managers each attending weekly management meetings and providing updates on their respective departments. The meetings were very operational-focussed.”
They weren’t broken, but they weren’t building momentum either.
The Leap: Letting Go of the Vine
EOS required Steve to step fully into his Visionary role, and that meant letting go of day-to-day operational control.
“It was a concern to me as founder/CEO standing down from my role and opening the floor for our team to choose their Visionary … I was also just a little concerned at giving up some operational management responsibilities to the Integrator, even though I had absolutely no doubt in my mind that Paul would be the perfect candidate.”
For many founders, this is the toughest part of EOS. But it’s also the most freeing. By trusting the process and empowering the Integrator, Visionaries unlock growth they could never achieve on their own.
The Shift: From Management to Leadership
Once EOS was in place, the transformation was striking. The “management team” became a true leadership team.
“We have effectively transformed the Management Team to a Leadership Team, reducing the number of bums on seats around our Leadership Team meetings. Our meetings are now sharply focussed on the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and performance measurement, rather than operational matters.”
The Level 10 Meeting™ structure provided the framework, shifting conversations from updates to problem-solving and strategic focus. And at the heart of it all was the partnership between Visionary and Integrator.
“I believe Paul and I have the perfect V/I relationship … we have formed a great V/I duo.”
Stepping Into Their Roles
EOS gave Steve the tools and clarity to thrive in his natural role:
“The Accountability Chart helped establish clear roles between the Visionary and Integrator. Using the VTO we have reviewed our core focus, values, 3yr plan and 1 year plan. It has instilled a discipline within the business to run Level 10 Meetings in a set format, with set agenda, times and rules.”
With Rocks, To-Dos and Issues Lists in place, and even small innovations like lights on the boardroom table to keep meetings focused. EOS created the discipline that freed Steve to focus on vision, growth and culture.
The Future: Clarity, Confidence & Real Traction
Provident Insurance now runs with alignment and focus. EOS hasn’t just changed how they meet, it’s reshaped how they lead.
“EOS has given us clarity and confidence that together we can achieve great things.” – Steve Owens
Provident Insurance is now one of those companies that knows what it feels like to get real traction.
